Spring has arrived and with it the urge to learn how to plant grass seed so you can have a lush green lawn your family can enjoy all summer long. Luckily, planting grass seed is simple. To plant grass seed you will need to know what to purchase, what type of grass you already have, and know when to plant your seeds.
First, you need to identify your grass, and you can do this by looking at pictures on-line or taking a sample to a plant nursery or home improvement store that sells lawn supplies. Once you know what type of grass you need you should know the size of your yard so that you can purchase the correct amount of grass seed. If you home is new and you do not have any grass yet, then look into the different types of grass and choose the one that suits your needs. Before you spread your grass seeds make sure the top soil of your yard is tilled loose so the seeds can grow properly.
Once you have your grass seed you have two planting choices. Many landscapers just grab handfuls of grass seed and throw it evenly on the lawn to spread it around the yard, while other buy spreaders that you push for a more uniform seed coverage. The seeds do not have to planted into the soil as they sill sew just being on top of the dirt in the yard. If you have no grass to begin with you will need to cover your newly seeded lawn with straw to protect your seeds from predators like birds, and from rain run-off. The straw will also keep the ground warm if you like in a temperate area of the country.
If you live in areas where it snows it is best to lay your grass seeds in the spring for the best results. However, if you live where it is warm all year you can plant grass seeds at any time to achieve a fuller lawn. Follow these steps and you will know how to plant grass seeds to grow a lawn or to make your current lawn fuller.
